Music video themes

SEX-
Visual connotations:

The lyrics in this songs have strong  visual links to sex. We will be following Andrew Goodwin's conventions of "Amplifying" this. However our music artist will not be fully naked but we will create an illusion of her being fully naked by showing her bare back. The use of bedding as a prop also represents the act of sex and gives the viewer a "private" show. The main colour associated with sex is red. We will be using this through our artist's use of costume and make up. Red lipstick on females has been  popular following the "pop" iconic sensation Marilyn Monroe. Red lipstick will give viewers the "male gaze" and be subject to viewing our artist Giselle in a sexual manner. The artist will be showcasing a messy hairdo in the music video which can connote messy sex.

INNOCENCE-
Visual connotations:

                      The lyrics,
"
" show that the artist has an innocent, vulnerable and possible shy personality. In this music video we will use a white sheet to represent this as well as close ups on the eyes signature "big eyes" will also be used to represent innocence .We could possibly explore with the artist's dual like personality as being sexually active but shy.

Light and Dark-

Visual Connotations:

We will explore light and dark backgrounds and lighting in the music video. This will juxtapose the contrasting lyrics in the chorus that represent shyness and innocence versus the first verse which shows a sexual prowess,"Break or seize me
If the flame gets blown out in the shine
I will know that you can not be mine
Never leave me"

Willis (1990)

"Pop stars are, to some extent, symbolic vehicles with which young women understand themselves more fully, even if, by doing so, they partly shape their personalities to fit the stars alleged preferences" - Willis (1990)

An example of where this statement links with is for the artist Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga inspires young people, this has happened in New Zealand, in New Zealand Lady Gaga has allowed young males to come out and talk about their sexuality and made them feel comfortable.

Our artist, FKA Twigs, would be an inspiration and a role model to many young people/teenagers around the world. Our artist has a very unique identity, her image would inspire many and people would want to be like her/look like her as she is very different. An example of this is the vast amount of young females that are now getting their septum pierced as they have seen it on FKA Twigs.

Conventions

-Narrative/performance
-fast editing
-extreme close ups
-sepia toned
-colours

Most videos for trip hop are narrative/performance. An example of a trip hop music video is Lana Del Ray ‘summertime sadness’. The video consists with the soul and jazz aspects that you would find associated with trip hop (Trip hop has many different features to it as shown in a previous post). The video is mostly conceptual, but the video is mainly narrative, the difference between this music video and other trip hop music videos is that it goes against some of the conventions that you would expect there to be although the sepia tone is maintained throughout the song, which you would expect there to be in a trip hop music video/song.

Treatment

TREATMENT

The music video is of a brand new artist who is here to make a statement within the music industry. Her name is Giselle. Within this video you are going to learn the reason why Giselle is born to be an everlasting Trip-hop star all in just 2minutes.

This video is telling you a story of her imagination and dreams of being able to trust a guy so dearly she would kiss him with the lights on; as she brings the audience into her quirky, Erotic and colourful dream of seducing her crush, As she flashes in and out of her dream showing her reality as she winds deep within her soul believing her dream is really happening.

This music video shows her true instincts and persona as she is an innocent sexual icon which would  help her appeal to men and ladies, however she does not actually put everything out there as she plays with her audience giving them an illusion in order to make their minds wonder of into their own imagination to create their personal vision to ‘lights on’.

moodboard

A moodboard represents ideas that we have for the music video in an image form. This mood board shows hair style ideas, make up ideas and location ideas that we are planning on having for our music video. The mise en scene i a music video is important, it makes up a music video, it would also attract a certain demographic. We will be using chromakey in our music video, we will use it through out and we will add a dark background.

Potential camera angles and shots for music video

In the music video camera angles are very important, it allows the music video to flow better and would make it look more professional.
Shots
Extreme close ups - The extreme close ups of the artist will allow the audience to see her facial expressions, we are planning on having a bed scene in the music video and in this scene she will try to be seductive.
Close ups - The close ups will show the details of the make up and hair that the artist will have.
Long shots - The long shots will show the clothes that she is wearing it will show her costume.
Medium shots - I think that in the music video the medium shots would be effective as you would be able to have a good view of the artist (Giselle) singing the song.

Camera angles
Eye level - These shots would make the artist engaged with the audience more.
High angle - The high angle shot would show her in the bed when she is lying down, we would have a medium shot at this point because it would show her facial expressions and it would also show any extra movement that show would be doing for example with her arms.
Zoom in and out - Zooming would show the characters features from a close perspective to a far perspective and the other way too. Instead of zooming in and out with the camera effect we would move our physical bodies forward and back as it looks more effective.

Timeline

filming schedule

This is our filming schedule which we are going to strictly oblige by in order to get our video filmed within the deadline time.

Haistyles and make up looks

This hairstyle is a common African traditional hairstyle called the bantu knot. Its quite eccentric as it stands out as the hair is pointed upwards which shows defiance and uniqueness. This is an edgy look and is currently trending on catwalks ;As our artist is part of the"pop" culture we will aim to give our artist a trendy ,modern look because she's an upcoming artist.  Also hairstyle also allows the audience to see the artists beauty as n hair is blocking her face.
Using pins this hairstyle can offer versatile looks  these box braids can also make a bold statement

quite familiar to the bantu knot

FKA youtube

On her youtube channel you can see the amount of subscribers that she has, you are also able to see the amount of views that she has had on each of her videos and the amount of people that have liked and disliked her videos. Overall you can see that that she has more people liking her videos than disliking them.

Trip Hop

The genre of FKA Twigs is Trip hop, Trip hop is a type of electronic music that originated in the early 1990s in the United Kingdom, it has influences from music such as soul, funk and Jazz, but it is mostly a fusion of hip hop and electronic music. Common musical aesthetics includes a bass heavy drum beat (that you hear in some electronic songs) which often emulates the slowed break beat samples which is typical in most hip hop songs. The vocals are often female and it features characteristics of different and unique singing styles which include R&B, Jazz and rock, the fact that it can influence both R&B and Jazz is because it is a female voice which is mostly associated with these genres of music as females are more common within that industry. The melancholy of Trip hop is also popular as most acts were inspired by post punk bands. The sounds within the music often show samples of Rhodes pianos, saxophones, trumpets, and flute. The lyrics within Trip hop offers aural atmospherics with instrumental hip hop rather than the hard-hitting lyrics which Rap and Rock music offer in their songs.
